Hello, I heard about Progress Through Processors and i decided to help. Facebook application automatically everything arranged, but instead of my email and password, I got assigned email gr36839@gridrepublic.org and a password which I do not know. I wanted to add a new PC, but I can not log into my (this) account. Fortunately, I have still logged on this PC, but if I will logged out, I will not be able to log into it.

What should I do? Thank you.

PS: Excuse errors in the text (Google Translate).

the idea of PTP is that your facebook account becomes the point of access.

so if you want to add a new computer, go to that machine and login to your facebook account.

then access the progress thru processors app, click on "dashboard" in the menubar, and then click "add computer".  this will connection you to a page that will allow you to download software for various platforms.

when you download an installer in this way, you will not need to provide your email and password.

But I do want to set the accounts by myself. Set my personal information, connect to any team, trace team and team members, etc...

PTP is good because I have a profile on Facebook statistics, but I do not want me to GridRepublic blocking access to the accounts of projects. (I learned about PTP and I joined. But it was a mistake. If I only knew how it works (PTP, BOINC, Gridrepublic, projects + accounts of projects) ... I would download BOINC, registered myself to Grdirepublic and projects, but not via PTP.) I want to set all by myself. Is it possible?

BTW: I logged into Facebook, the PTP I chose to add the computer, then downloaded program (PTP 6.8.13) from GridRepublic. And after installing it just did not work and did not want to connect to GridRepublic.

ok, a couple issues --

first, about accessing project servers --

before the end of they year i expect we'll be able to provide direct access to functions hosted at project servers, like project forums, teams, etc.  at present, as you have suggested, if this is important to you, there is a workaround:

join the projects or join GR prior to adding the PTP app at facebook. (probably is it easiest to join GR since this way you can join all your projects at once.)  in either scenario-- joining at projects or joining projects via GR-- you will have an email+pw login that can be used to access the project servers directly.

if you have already joined PTP, this is not a problem.  just do this:

  • at facebook: remove PTP via the facebook menubar item: facebook settings > applications settings
  • in your desktop software: "detach" your desktop software by clicking the menubar item advanced > stop using gridrepublic.  (if you don't see the menubar, click the "advanced" button in the lower right.)
  • go to gridrepublic and create your GR/project accounts
  • go back to facebook and re-add the PTP application.  this time, at the registration page, in the first question, check "no, i have a boinc/GR account"

...and then all should be straightforward, and you will be attached in PTP but still have an id you can use to login at projects.

as for your install problems -- can you give me a bit more detail about where you are running into problems?

{1} did you run the PTP (or BOINC) installer on the problem machine, or did you try to copy from one machine to the other? (copying installs will in most cases cause problems)

{2} in any case, i'd suggest uninstalling, and removing all files, and then going to the PTP "dashboard" page and using the "add computer" button to get a new installer.

fyi, uninstall instructions (copied from the PTP User FAQ):

FOR WINDOWS

  • To remove the application, go to Start > Control Panels > Add/Remove, and then click "Remove" Progress Thru Processors
  • To delete your account information and program data, delete the "BOINC" folder, which can be found here:
    • For Windows Vista and Windows 7 -- C:\ProgramData\BOINC
    • For Win2000/WinXP users -- C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC

FOR MAC

  • To remove the application, run the "Uninstall Progress Thru Processors" application that is included with the installer.
  • To delete your account information and program data, delete the "Progress Thru Processors" folder:
    • /Library/Application Support/BOINC Data
    • /Users/[username]/Library/Preferences/BOINC Manager Preferences

Anybody know how to retrieve your password that gets assigned? The "I forgot my password" link doesn't work as password gets sent to assigned email address (in my case, gr43205@gridrepublic.org) ... I have various Linux servers with a lot more power than my laptop I wish to connect to my account, but they require the account password, which for all I can tell, is being withheld from us.

Is this /actually/ the situation? That there is no way for us to tell our own passwords? If so, who do I hit really hard for making such a stupid decision, completely against the spirit of this whole open project, until the situation changes? Or do I just have to create a new account myself and advise others to do the same?

Okay, here's how you do it people. From a machine that you have logged into, copy the following files to the directory you're running BOINC out of on the destination system:

account_boinc.bakerlab.org_rosetta.xml
account_climateprediction.net.xml
account_www.malariacontrol.net.xml
acct_mgr_login.xml
acct_mgr_reply.xml
acct_mgr_request.xml
acct_mgr_url.xml

When you start the client up on that system, it will attempt to log in using those details. The signing key will fail, as I guess this is against the systems hostname or something, but it just seems to get re-signed, and logs in successfully. The new system will now appear in your 'my computers' tab in the GR control panel.

How much I advise this I don't know... there's not much point having an account if you don't control it yourself (after all, your account and your credits could just be taken from you at any moment, you don't know your password so tough) ... it may just be better to get your own account if the situation really is that your account obtained through the facebook app isn't really your own account.

the idea of PTP is that your FB account becomes your portal to volunteer computing, so there are limited cases where you would need to know the auto-generated email+PW used (in the background) for your account.  Ie, most everything should be handled autmatically.

but there are of course exceptions.  so if you want to get your account info, you can access it here:

http://apps.facebook.com/processors/credentials.php

(of course you need to be logged into FB to use this; if you are not, it will ask you to login)
