Would it be possible to add these projects at GR?  I  asked about AI once in an email to GR support and Matt replied that it might be a problem since AI is not a non-profit (and AQUA may be similar).  Can you address this here in the forum to give a definitive answer for all who might be interested?

TIA!

We've been discussing this, and it's a complex issue.  Before posting my thoughts, I'd like to ask what you and others who might be reading this think about the issue?

Is the concern whether or not it's okay (politically, ethically, legally, or otherwise) for a non-profit like Grid Republic to publish the statistics of those who participate in the projects of for-profits like AI or AQUA?

Well generally, the idea is that the volunteers running a project are fundamentally engaged in an act of philanthropy: they are donating their computers.  So when one gets into a situation wherein a project is using such donated resources for commercial ends, my assumption is that this is a thing we need to be sensitive about.

What do you think?

I agree with you on all counts and can understand the concern.  The decision to contribute computer time to the effort is up to the volunteer and GR is not needed to run the project.  If it's inappropriate for GR to facilitate a volunteer's participation in a commercial venture by making it easier for them to manage, and collecting/posting stats, I would understand if a decision was made not to do so.  But, as far as I'm concerned, that's entirely up to the folks who manage GR.  :-)

Generally, the philosophy here will be to let the Volunteers decide what to do with their machines; but I want to be sure we appropriately provide relevant information.  Right now, I'm not sure we have a way to do that.

Providing the relevant info on a project is a good idea.  If you're able to do so and can include those projects at GR, that's great.  If not, I think everybody would understand.  Thanks for your consideration.  And, Happy New Year!  :-)

A solution could consist in creating a new category of projects, next to "beta" and "bio/chem", clearly marked to contain commercial projects: this way contributors could still benefit from the centralized project control but neophites would still be warned about the destination of their contribution.

Thanks for the suggestion.  That might be the best/easiest way to do it.

I second the idea of a clearly demarcated 'Commercial' or 'For Profit' section.

I have been running Aqua, and completely missed the fact that is was for profit when I signed up for it. Although I still agree with the project, It would have sunk in quicker if it was clearly marked as such.

It might even better if it had a seperate tab, like ADD 4 PROFIT ?

Just checking in to see if this is still an open issue.  :-)

Well, I am still interested, but I am a little to busy to volunteer any development time. Sorry.

yes, still an open issue...  updating the project list (writing project descriptions, updating the db and list, adding the new "for profit" category) and also adding mac support are tops on the to-do list.  there are a couple exciting prospects that have been tying us up, though (...i can't announce these yet as things may or may not work out.  but keep fingers crossed and stay tuned...)

in any event, one area where we could use community help is in writing the project descriptions -- this can be fairly labor intensive.  anyone  interested in contributing, click here.  (be sure read the article guidelines, then scroll down to "Other Projects (to be added/considered)" for the list of projects for which descriptions are needed / in progress).
